If the book you’re reading recommends a technique that’s not widely known, then maybe it’s because it’s not widely used in practice.
It’s possible that it’s best for the specific example, but if you’re writing code that is meant to be portable, it’s much better to use standard functions such as _pthread_create() and _pthread_join(). This lets you easily use many more of the features of the platform. If you write your own thread functions, you’re pretty much limited to how the operating system itself implements threads.
Note that if you want to write portable code, you’ll probably need to use the pthreads interface, and pthreads is a really old library that was created before C became widely popular.
